The comparative research was conducted by an international team of Russian and foreign
experts. The project started when the migration crisis in Europe culminated. Therefore, the new
phenomena and unexpected challenges required to refocus the comparative studies on the
following points: 1. The social and legal status of the labor migrants in Russia– in comparison
with the situation of the new refugees in Europe; 2. The socio-cultural motivations and
obstacles for adaptation of labor migrants’ in Russia and refugees / migrants in Europe; 3. The
institutions and legal regulation in receiving the migrants / refugee flows in both regions; 4. Due
to the global digitalisation (IT-tools, social media, internet platforms etc) of communication
between the migrants /refugees and with the receiving countries, the migration landscape in
regions to be compared fundamentally transformed. The team in this field reached unique
results.
